The Case for Immigration Enforcement and Secure Borders – Faisal Shahzad, the main man behind the plot to blow up a bomb that was centrally located in time square was a naturalized, U.S. citizen but he had terrorism on his mind from the beginning. However, his presence in American rocketed immigration enforcement to the front pages of the papers. What happened exposed many flaws in the United States immigration system as well as the many weaknesses that exist in our policies and information sources. Many Americans feel that our government hasn’t focused on gathering intelligence about U.S. citizens such as Faisal. These are people who have been naturalized in the U.S. because of our currently failing policies. It’s undeniable that many people believe immigration enforcement and secure borders can keep America safe and protect our people from the terrorists that exist in close quarter countries.

Faisal Shahzad’s arrest was just the beginning of the long list of terrorists that could exist in the United States. His presence raised awareness about the situation we face here at home. National security is a huge concern and it’s no surprise that securing the borders would stop the infiltration of illegal immigrants. Allowing unwanted people into the country isn’t protecting anyone. We don’t know who these people are that are sneaking in illegally and we have no way to protect the hard working men and women of America without knowing. They could be making plots to harm us, gathering together for a mass attack and ultimately it’s not safe having open borders with no enforcement. Faisal was granted U.S. citizenship because of a failed background check that didn’t recognize his existence in the United States as a danger. Authorities were never alerted on his citizenship and therefore he went unnoticed.
Our national security policy needs to be stricter than just facing the fears of our public areas being blown up at the time of need; we need to address who’s living here so those scares don’t happen. If we prevent terrorists from coming in we can stop potential attacks.
