Michael Steele:African American Voters Mistreated By Republican Party – Earlier this week the Republican National Convention Chairman Michael Steele told an audience of DePaul students that African Americans have no reason to vote for republican candidates. He also went on to say that the GOP’s “southern strategy” has alienated minorities, specifically African Americans, for many years. Steele outlined the strategy as focusing on only the white voters from the South and neglecting African American voters in the region.
One student from the crowd asked Steele what reason African Americans would have to vote for republicans in the first place.
“You really don’t have a reason to, to be honest — we haven’t done a very good job of really giving you one. True? True.” Steele replied.

Steele addressed the crowd about discrimination that he also faced over the course of his years in college. Steele has not been known to bite his tongue regarding issues of race and politics. He has long been an advocate for the inclusion of African Americans within his party. This was not the first time that Steele spoke so candidly about his beliefs. He told TV One last November that he believed that some of his fellow republicans were “scared” of him because of his race. During the course of his speech Steele continued to touch on how the Republican part can better go about addressing African American voters in the United States, a demographic that Steele says has been neglected in the South since the 1970’s.

“We have lost sight of the historic, integral link between the party and African-Americans,” Steele told the crowd.
