John Kerry And Joe Lieberman Pressing Climate Bill – It appears that John Kerry and Joe Lieberman will be pressing onward with climate reform without former participant Senator Lindsey Graham. He had said that it was impossible to pass the legislation now because of several disagreements the crew has had regarding offshore drilling and immigration reform. The disagreement came after the passing of the recent controversial Arizona immigration bill that gave police officers the right to ask for documentation regarding legality in the country from anyone that they deemed as suspicious. Detractors of the bill have said that they believe that the bill will only lead to even more abuse of power and racial profiling in the state.

“Regrettably, in my view, this has become impossible in the current environment,” Graham said in a statement. “I believe there could be more than 60 votes for this bipartisan concept in the future. But there are not nearly 60 votes today and I do not see them materializing until we deal with the uncertainty of the immigration debate and the consequences of the oil spill.”
Kerry and Lieberman said they plan to introduce the bill on Wednesday nearly two weeks after they first planned to unveil the bill. The bill reached a crossroads in recent weeks when the disagreement first occurred. Some have criticized Graham, saying that his unwillingness to work with them because of other disagreements has caused the country to not be ask productive.
“We are more encouraged today that we can secure the necessary votes to pass this legislation this year in part because the last (few) weeks have given everyone with a stake in this issue a heightened understanding that as a nation, we can no longer wait to solve this problem which threatens our economy, our security and our environment,” Kerry and Lieberman said in a joint statement.
